Monk on Brown’s Sixth Man campaign: ‘I ain’t going to argue with him.’

Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown sat down for his pregame presser before Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers and delivered an opening statement:

“Malik Monk should get some mention for Sixth Man of the Year. Just putting that out there.”

Brown, who had received some playful tease from some media members about whether or not he wears socks while on the sideline, even ripped off his sneaker and placed his foot on the table when a reporter responded, “only if you wear socks.”

Foot on the table and all, Brown delivered his statement about Monk’s deservedness for Sixth Man of the Year consideration.

“Malik Monk should be getting mentioned for Sixth Man of the Year this year. I’ve got socks on.”

Monk continued to pad his case for the honor as the 24-year-old scored 20 points on six-of-nine shooting from the field to go along with four rebounds and six assists over only 20 minutes of action.

The first-year King has been one of the team’s more reliable offensive weapons as Monk has proven to be a knockdown threat on the perimeter, an aggressor when going to the rim, and a distributor (4.4 assists per game). If the Kings continue to win games, Monk could very well see his name pop up in award discussions this spring.

“I’m not going to argue with him,” Monk said of Brown’s call for the consideration of Sixth Man of the Year.

Monk, who inked a two-year, $19 million deal with Sacramento back in July, is off to a strong start in his Kings career as the former Kentucky guard is averaging 14.6 points and 4.4 assists per game while shooting 48 percent from the field–all career-highs.

The Sacramento Kings entered the 2022-23 season hoping to break a 16-year playoff drought. After hiring Mike Brown as the team’s new coach, the Kings drafted Keegan Murray as the number four overall pick. They continued to make moves over the summer, trading for Kevin Huerter and signing multiple free agents, including guard Malik Monk.
