The Troy Taylor era at Sacramento State has officially ended.

On Monday, Taylor was introduced as Stanford’s Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football.

“I am thrilled to be the new head football coach at Stanford University,” Taylor said. “The opportunity to lead the finest student-athletes in the country is truly a dream come true, and I would like to thank President Tessier-Lavigne, Provost Drell and Bernard Muir. I believe that Stanford Football is perfectly positioned to become champions on the football field while maintaining our world-class reputation for academic excellence.”

Taylor finished his time with Sac State on Friday, as the Hornets lost 66-63 in the FCS quarterfinals to Incarnate Word. Prior to this season, Sac State had never won an FCS playoff game. Taylor led Sac State to a perfect regular season record and overall, a 30-8 record in his four seasons in Sacramento.

During the introductory press conference, he said the seniors really changed the climate in the locker room while he was there. He added he would help Sacramento State with the transition as much as he can.

“It’s emotional to leave a place that I really love, and it’s a special place to me,” Taylor said. “I’m going to miss those guys, I’ll maintain relationships and they all have my phone number. Anything I can do to help my student-athletes, help Sacramento State moving forward until we play them in game two, I’m there to help with the transition.”

In a press release announcing the move, Bernard Muir, Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics, said he’s excited to welcome a “proven winner” to the Stanford family.

“He possesses an incredible football mind and has a long history of caring deeply for the student-athletes he leads,” Muir said in the release. “I am excited for the next chapter of Cardinal football and eager for our student-athletes to experience Troy’s passion, wisdom and leadership.”
