The San Francisco 49ers have been hit with injuries in the quarterback room all season, from Trey Lance in Week 2 to Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13. Now you can add rookie QB Brock Purdy to the list as well.

Purdy suffered an oblique injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing through most of the game in slight pain. The injury likely occurred when Purdy scrambled for a first down, a play that was negated due to a holding penalty on San Francisco.

Up big heading into the fourth, coach Kyle Shanahan decided to sit Purdy to not risk any further ailments to his midsection. The QB had an MRI Monday to confirm the oblique/rib injury as there was no serious issues to address. Purdy himself only feels sore after the game, working through physical therapy the last two days with the medical staff.

“I feel good. Just taking it one day at a time, getting as much treatment as I can, but overall, I feel pretty good,” the QB said Tuesday. “Just sore. When I got into the treatment room, they just did some tests and stuff on me and whatnot. Yeah, it wasn’t like excruciating pain or anything like that. It’s just where I was at, just sore after a game.”

While the gunslinger feels alright, he hasn’t done much with a football yet, leaving his status open for the short turnaround game against the Seattle Seahawks Thursday.

“Honestly, I haven’t been out to practice or tried to throw a football or anything yet. So, it’s basically how I feel when I’m walking around and trying to do movements and stuff in the pool. Yeah, I can still jog and run and do all that kind of stuff, but I haven’t tried playing football yet,” he added.

Officially listed as limited Monday and Tuesday, the media was ushered out of practice before Brock Purdy started throwing. And while all signs are leaning towards him starting, a lot can happen in the next 48 hours.

“We’ll find that out as these two days go, we don’t have much time, but we’re not going to try to figure that out today or tomorrow. It’d probably be on Thursday where we’d have the best chance to know,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

The good news is that Purdy can’t make the injury worse by playing through it, it really comes down to how much he can tolerate the pain in Washington. If he can do that, he’ll be out there Thursday night.

“No, it’s just can he play with it? If he plays, he won’t be able to make it worse,” Shanahan added.
