The San Francisco 49ers have lost one of their key members in the personnel department, Ran Carthon, to greener pastures in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Titans have finalized a deal to hire 49ers’ director of pro personnel Ran Carthon as their new general manager Tuesday. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Diana Russini and Jeff Darlington.

Carthon interviewed for the position Friday with a panel of Titans executives, including controlling owner Amy Adams-Strunk.

The former NFL running back has spent five seasons as the Red & Gold’s director of pro personnel, elevated also to director of player personnel two seasons ago.

Carthon, 41, joined San Francisco after spending five seasons (2012-16) as the director of pro personnel with St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. Before that, he served as a pro scout with the Atlanta Falcons for four seasons (2008-2011). An undrafted rookie, Carthon played for the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons in 2005 and 2006.

San Francisco will receive a compensatory third-round pick in the next two drafts as part of Rooney Rule incentives for teams to develop minority head coaches and GM candidates. The 49ers would receive another third-rounder if defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is hired to be a head coach elsewhere this offseason.

San Francisco received picks for the hires of Mike McDaniel (Miami), Martin Mayhew (Washington) and Robert Saleh (NYJ), bringing their total to 11 draft picks in the 2023 NFL draft in April.

The news comes after reports last week indicated that 49ers’ assistant GM Adam Peters would stay on in his role next season. Peters, 42, declined interview requests from the Titans and Arizona Cardinals for their GM positions.
