Former Oakland A’s World Series champion Sal Bando dies at 78
Three-time Oakland A's World Series champion Sal Bando passed away over the weekend. He was 78 years old. He played 3rd base for the A's.

Three-time Oakland A’s World Series champion Sal Bando passed away over the weekend. He was 78 years old.
A four-time MLB All-Star, Bando has battled cancer for the past five years, according to a statement from his family.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Athletics Hall of Famer Sal Bando,” the Oakland A’s said in a statement. “Captain Sal,” as he was affectionately known among the A’s faithful, was a four-time All-Star and led the Club to three consecutive World Series titles. Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and fans.”
Captain Sal began his career with the Kansas City Athletics in 1966, before relocating with the team to Oakland in 1967. He represented the organization in the All-Star game in 1969 and from 1972-74. Throughout his career, he averaged a .254 batting average with 242 homeruns and 1,031 RBIs.

Bando ended his playing career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1981 before moving to the team’s front office. He served as the team’s general manager from 1991 to 1999.
