Trade season has officially started for the Sacramento Kings.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Kings are close to acquiring 6’8 forward Kessler Edwards and cash from the Brooklyn Nets.

The 22-year-old is averaging 1.1 points and 1.0 rebounds per game over just 14 appearances this season.

Edwards, a second-year forward out of Pepperdine, has an 6’11 wingspan and holds career averages of 13.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game on 39 percent shooting from the field over 17 appearances in the NBA G-League.

The Kings have a $4 million trade exception that expires this evening and a separate $1.6 million exception from last year’s Marvin Bagley III trade, but it’s currently being determined if that’s that Sacramento is using an exception to bring Edwards in.

Edwards is on a $1.6 million contract this season and has a team option for $1.9 million in 2023-24.

The 22-year-old forward has reportedly approved the trade, allowing the Kings to retain his early bird rights once his contract expires. Edwards signed a one-year extension with the Nets this past offseason, becoming one of 16 players in the league to have the early-bird rights contract stipulation.

He is expected to get an opportunity to play with Sacramento’s G-League affiliate, the Stockton Kings. But with only two days to go until the trade deadline, his situation remains “fluid”.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
