Add one more to the coaching carousel for the San Francisco 49ers, losing Cory Undlin to the Texans Tuesday.

The 49ers’ defensive passing game specialist/secondary coach is reportedly heading to Houston to take over as the team’s defensive passing game coordinator. The fourth Red & Gold staffer to leave this offseason for Texas, Undlin will join former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans on his staff next season.

KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson was the first to report the hire.

A free agent after the 2022 season, Undlin joined the 49ers in 2021 after serving as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Only spending two seasons in the Bay, the 51-year-old assistant coach reclaimed some of his rapport around the NFL, convincing Ryans that he was the right man for his new group of diverse coaches in Houston.

“We want a diverse coaching staff, and that’s not only diversity in race, but diversity in experience,” Ryans said during his introductory press conference. “We want experienced coaches, some coaches with not so much experience. We want coaches who are great teachers. That’s the one thing we’re looking for, most importantly, is great teachers. We want guys who are positive, bring positive energy. We want guys who can connect with players.”

“I know he loves our staff and he knows I’m working through that too right now, so DeMeco and I will be probably talking a lot here over the next two weeks and I’m just trying to do what’s best for the 49ers,” head coach Kyle Shanahan previously stated. “I know he is trying to do what’s best for Houston and we’re both going to try to do what’s best for all the families involved too with our number one job being to do it for the organizations.”
