The San Francisco 49ers have had a lot of turnover over the past few years, both on the field and in the front office. But thanks to that turnover, they’ll be one of the most draft-pick heavy teams next month.

The NFL released their list of compensatory draft picks Thursday with the 49ers and Los Angeles Rams leading the charge at four each. Those picks are determined by the net loss of players for each organization in the previous free agency. The 49ers have lost their fair share of players over the years, with Laken Tomlinson and Raheem Mostert being some of the biggest names last year. In spite of their departure, the league has rewarded the 49ers with picks in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds of the 2023 NFL draft.

San Francisco also received three third-round picks, thanks to the Rooney Rule. The initiative awards picks to the prior employer of a minority employee who has been hired by another club as its head coach or primary football executive.  Jets head coach Robert Saleh, Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and Titans general manager Ran Carthon have all left the Niners in the last three years.

Despite trading their own third-round pick (Christian McCaffrey trade), San Francisco will have 11 draft selections in April, only one less than the Houston Texans (12) for most in the NFL. The breakdown goes as followed: Three picks in the third round, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and four selections in seventh.

Known for finding diamonds in the rough, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have a lot of draft capital to play with this spring.
