On Monday, the San Francisco Giants placed shortstop Brandon Crawford on the injury report with left knee discomfort.

The team announced he is expected to miss at least a week of baseball activities before being evaluated. The team’s website says this is the same knee injury that landed the 36-year-old on the injured list twice last season. The team is just over two weeks away from opening day in New York against the Yankees.

“We are just trying to get him ready for Opening Day,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “We don’t see a lot of value in trying to stick him out there at shortstop and pushing him really hard. We want him to be ready for New York. We’re just going to have that mindset of getting him as physical and comfortable as possible for Opening Day.”

Crawford missed nearly a month of action last season because of knee issues, limiting him to 118 games. Last year’s .231 batting average was a noticeable dip from his career-high .298 the year prior and his his third lowest in his 12-year career.

The Giants currently have Thairo Estrada as a backup shortstop to Brandon Crawford.
