Sergio Romo is returning to San Francisco, but only for Spring Training.

The reliever who helped the Giants win World Series titles in 2010, ’12 and ’14 agreed to a minor league contract over the weekend.

Romo will then officially retire during the Giants’ final Spring Training game on Monday, March 27, against the Oakland A’s at Oracle Park.

“The relationship that Giants fans have with their players is unique – few exemplify that bond more than Sergio,” Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi said in a press release. “After all that he accomplished as a Giant from 2008 to 2016, including his huge contributions to the championship teams, it’s a thrill to have him back in a San Francisco uniform. We look forward to having his leadership and presence in camp and are hopeful he can ramp up for game action.”

Sergio Romo was selected in the 28th round by San Francisco in the 2005 draft. The reliever made his debut with the Giants’ on June 26, 2008 against Cleveland.

In nine years of pitching with the Giants, Romo never had a season with an ERA over 4.0. In his 515 games with the Giants, which ranks fifth all-time, Romo went 32-26 with a 2.58 ERA.

In his 15-year major league career, Romo also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Tampa Bay Rays (2017-2018), Miami Marlins (2019), Minnesota Twins (2019-2020), Oakland Athletics (2021), Seattle Mariners (2022) and Toronto Blue Jays (2022).
