The San Francisco 49ers have suffered more losses than additions through the first week of free agency. But just like last year, the rewards could come down the road.

The Red & Gold could potentially get four additional compensatory draft picks in 2024, thanks to the team’s net losses this offseason. The website, OverTheCap.com, projects that the 49ers could receive picks in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds after losing a number of valuable players, the maximum of four picks for one year.

The NFL’s formula for compensatory picks is based off of any team’s losses in free agency. The league determines exact compensation based on several factors, including a player’s average salary per year, playing time and playoff awards. San Francisco will already be awarded a special compensatory selection at the end of the third round of the 2024 draft (and in 2025) for losing DeMeco Ryans (Houston Texans) and Ran Carthon (Tennessee Titans) to head coach and general manager jobs this offseason.

On the players’ front, OTC projects that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s new deal with the Las Vegas Raiders ($24.25 million annually) will cancel out the signing of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave ($21 million annually). Additionally, the acquisition of QB Sam Darnold ($4.5 million annually) should be offset by the loss of defensive end Charles Omenihu ($8 million annually).

Here’s where the 49ers get its’ picks.

The departure of right tackle Mike McGlinchey to the Denver Broncos ($17.5 million annually) is expected to the net a third-round pick for the 49ers in 2024. While the loss of DE Samson Ebukam ($8 million annually) should land the 49ers a fifth-round selection next year.

The Red & Gold could also net picks for the losses of cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (sixth round), safety Jimmie Ward (sixth round), linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (sixth round), offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill (seventh round) and DE Hassan Ridgeway (seventh round).

Unfortunately, the cap for compensatory picks is set at four for any given year, but still a fine haul for the Red & Gold. The 49ers netted seven compensatory picks for the 2023 draft, after losing both coaches & players the year prior.

Here’s a look at the 49ers’ 2023 free agency thus far:
