Former Oakland A’s infielder Jed Lowrie announces retirement

After 14 years, seven of which were spent with the Oakland A’s, Jed Lowrie has announced his retirement from baseball.

The 38-year-old infielder made the announcement in a lengthy Instagram post.

“I was relentless in my pursuit to get better, whether on the field or fighting my way back. From a high school kid that had a ‘higher ceiling as a pitcher, than a hitter’ I’m proud of my accomplishments and the resiliency it took to thrive at the highest level for 15 years. I was luck to learn from some of the pillars in our game. And hopefully I did my part in passing on that institutional knowledge to the next generation. The players have never been more talented than they are right now. I’m amazed how high the bar has been pushed during my career. The game has changed.”

Lowrie went on to thank his family and friends who supported him throughout his MLB career. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Lowrie said the A’s allowed him to be himself, which drew him back to Oakland multiple times. During his 14-year career, seven of those were spent in Oakland over three different periods.

“Playing for [former A’s manager] Bob Melvin, he always did such a good job of knowing when to say the right things and when not to say anything,” Lowrie told the Chronicle.

His best season with the A’s came in 2018 when he hit .267 with 23 home runs and nearly 100 RBIs. Oakland cut him last August after he hit .180 and only three home runs.

Jed Lowrie was a first-round selection in the 2005 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox. After spending the beginning of his career in Boston, he also had stints in Houston and New York with the Mets, too.
