Tuesday in Oakland the Athletics gave fans a chance to see their product for FREE. We all love free stuff. Free admission, free parking, free memories. With a full house on hand the A’s showed off their young team in their old ball park. Oakland does have a team that fans can rally behind but they aren’t. Why? I believe there are several reasons. I am sure some of it has to deal with the way the organization has built some young talent only to ship them off too early. The other big reason seems to be their old home. The Coliseum doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the more modern parks. The A’s failed with their last stadium plan and now have a couple of potential sites that they are working on.
Tuesday should be encouraging for ownership. They had fans. They had a young team that is very likable. They have a stadium that needs a face lift or even an entirely different place all together. So like the movie, Field of Dreams, “If you build it they will come.” I think the A’s fans are there. I think they are waiting to jump back in. They have felt like they haven’t been treated fairly and a little organizational attention on Tuesday was needed and well received.
The team needs to keep working. The organization and city needs to keep on working on stadium plans. What could be exciting is if they all reached their peek at the same time. In the meantime, maybe try another freebie and enjoy the results for all parties involved.
