With NFL owners meeting this week, the topic of Roger Goodell and his contract extension appears to be on track.

Reports surfaced Tuesday that the NFL commissioner was set to have his contract extended, running through the 2027 season. The owners broached the subject at the league’s spring meeting Tuesday. Indianapolis Colts’ owner Jim Irsay replayed the news to the media.

While Goodell’s new deal has not been confirmed as of Wednesday, the negotiations have progressed well over the last few weeks.

“It’s just dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s, but it’s done,” Irsay said Tuesday. “We still have to rubber stamp it so to speak but its virtually done.

The current commissioner took over for incumbent Paul Tagliabue in 2006, helping the NFL reach new heights in media and broadcasting exposure.

“He’s done so much for the league with stability,” Irsay continued. “It’s a tough job, but he’s been a hard worker and worked very hard for the NFL and its success.”

The owners and league alike will likely look for a change in guard after Goodell’s new deal, with Roger adding in the process.

“It’s a healthy discussion to have. The job changes over the years,” Roger Goodell said. “It’s changed ever since I’ve been the commissioner. I know we will have the discussions at the appropriate time.”

“No question, he’s going to be involved and have options to stay on as a consultant and help us develop his list, what he thinks are the best people,” Irsay added. “He’ll be with us through it. The contract will speak to that. We’ll look for his contribution every way possible, how he can help us find the next commissioner or CEO and commissioner, however we feel the league needs to be set up going forward.”
