Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is one of several former players to spend time in the Bay Area on the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

Smith is among 78 players, along with nine coaches, to appear on the ballot. The 2024 Hall of Fame class is chosen by the National Football Foundation’s Honors Court, with an announcement expected in January 2024.

Additional 49ers to show up on the ballot include running back Garrison Hearst (Georgia), quarterback Ken Dorsey (Miami), quarterback Matt Cavanaugh (Pittsburgh), cornerback Antonio Langham (Alabama), linebacker Ken Norton Jr. (UCLA), and linebacker Takeo Spikes (Auburn).

Smith finished fourth in Heisman Trophy in 2004 after leading Utah to its first-ever 12-0 season. That same year, he was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. In three years as a Ute, he recorded 47 touchdowns, 5,203 passing yards and rushed for 1,072 yards.

The 2004 SI National Player of the Year would go on to be the first-overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers, leading them to only one playoff appearance in 2011. He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the 2013 season. In seven years with the 49ers, he threw for 14,280 yards and81 touchdowns.

The ballot is highlighted by Michael Vick, Larry Fitzgerald and Terrell Suggs.
