Nick Bosa is ‘pretty confident’ on getting a new deal done by training camp

On Day 1 of the 49ers’ 2023 mandatory minicamp, Nick Bosa was present but not practicing with the team. But that’s okay because it’s all part of the plan.

Coming off a dominant 2022 season where he was named the Defensive Player of the Year, the star edge rusher for San Francisco is working on better management heading into the season. A self-proclaimed workaholic, Bosa struggles with taking days off, even in the offseason. That’s why this time around, he’s taking his approach one day at a time until training camp.

“Just preparing myself for a long year and making sure that my body is going to be able to take on a load of 21 games…I don’t take days off very much. And that’s probably been the biggest change is just knowing when to take the days off,” Bosa said to the media Tuesday.

The 25-year-old has a few other things going on as well, including a looming mega-deal on the horizon.

Bosa’s rookie deal is set to finish after the 2023 season and is expected to make close to $18 million in the fifth year. His new contract, however, will blow that figure out of the park. On pace to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, the Ohio State alum will likely see a number over $30 million annually. For context, only Los Angeles Ram defensive lineman Aaron Donald is above that threshold, averaging $31.66 million per year.

While it would be nice to join Donald in that exclusive club, Bosa isn’t too concerned about that at the moment. Showing faith in the organization, the player is positive both sides will come to an agreement before the summer is over.

“Pretty high, yeah, I’m pretty confident about that,” he said when asked about getting a deal done before training camp.

As for the numbers themselves, the star pass rusher is confident he’ll get what he’s worth from the Red & Gold.

“I think I’ll get what I deserve,” Bosa said bluntly.

The 49ers feel the same way, confident that a deal will be struck sooner rather than later. But for now, the team remains in constant communication with him, and his agent at CAA Sports.

“Same as they are every year,” coach Kyle Shanahan said regarding conversations with Nick Bosa. “How you doing? How’s the workout been going? How’s Florida? How’s the boat? You look tan. You’re legs still look big. What are you going to do today? ‘Probably going to be in the weight room.'”
