Legendary Sacramento Kings broadcaster, coach, and general manager Jerry Reynolds joined Chris & Co. to discuss something a former Sacramento Kings player recently mentioned.

On an episode of the ALL THE SMOKE podcast that was filmed in Sacramento during the Kings’ playoff run, Jason Williams was asked who he’s picking on his team for a game of 5-on-5. Williams explained to hosts Matt Barnes and Stehpen Jackson why he’s picking all current generation stars.

“All these older players were great, but to me, the game’s evolved. I think it’s hard to compare these players too. They were all great in their own way, but, like, Oscar Robertson’s one of the greatest ever, correct? He can’t play today. That’s what I’m saying.”

Reynolds, who said Robertson is one of his favorite players, pushed back at that idea, joking with Chris & Co. Williams knows “very little” on the history of the NBA.

Additional topics discussed include:

  • If most players translate eras or is that saved for the greats?
  • What challenges would Jason Williams face in previous NBA eras?
  • Who’s a player in the past he’d like to see in today’s NBA and a player in today’s NBA that he’d like to see play in previous eras?
  • Why it’s important to acknowledge previous generations because those pioneers led to today’s players
