While the San Francisco 49ers & the rest of the NFL are on summer break, the Brock Purdy rumors have remained at the forefront of conversations.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter went on The Pat McAfee Show Wednesday, providing an update on Purdy’s recovery from offseason elbow surgery. Starting a throwing program at the end of May, the quarterback has been making progress each week on the field. And while he won’t be cleared to practice until training camp at the earliest, all signs are pointing to a return to the starting lineup.

“They’re [49ers] optimistic, but don’t know, that he’ll be ready for opening day,” Schefter said on the show Wednesday. But there’s still a whole way to go, there’s a whole plan in place…Everything that he does will be closely monitored all summer long…[He’s checked all the boxes] so far.”

While there is still a month or so to go, San Francisco figures to have Mr. Irrelevant back in the fold by the start of the regular season.

“Brock Purdy, if he’s healthy, is the No.1 [option], and my guess going into camp is that Sam Darnold has the edge to be No.2,” Schefter added.

The 49ers have remained consistent in their conversations with the media, waiting to see how Brock Purdy responds to the throwing program this summer.

“He’s right on pace. I think he throws three times a week. I do not sit and watch those,” coach Kyle Shanahan said to the media recently. “It’s part of his process of getting back and he’s continuing right on the track he’s always been on. No setbacks and it’s been very good so far.

“We’re taking it very slowly,” he continued. “It’s not like you just jump out and push stuff. You’re only supposed to throw on this date at this percentage, these many yards, and then you do a certain amount a couple days later and if you stay on track it should heal the right way. And right now, everything’s right on track and I don’t ask three weeks ahead. You just keep trying to stay on that trajectory.”
