When the Sacramento Kings faced the uphill battle of a 3-2 deficit during April’s first-round matchup against the Golden State Warriors, head coach Mike Brown opted to change his rotation in Game 6.

After receiving DNP-CDs in Game 4 and Game 5, Terence Davis was inserted back into Sacramento’s rotation with a green light on the offensive end, while the guard also used his notable energy to disrupt Warriors star Stephen Curry.

When the dust settled, the Kings had forced a Game 7 by picking up a convincing 118-99 win at Chase Center as Davis received Defensive Player of the Game honors for his efforts.

While Davis–as well as every other player tasked with defending Curry–could not slow down the two-time MVP winner in Game 7, Sacramento’s season was viewed as a success due to the ending of a 16-season playoff drought.

Davis, who will enter unrestricted free agency on Friday at 3:00 pm PST, might have played his final game in a Kings uniform, but the 26-year-old thinks that he grew as a player under Brown’s tutelage, even with his inconsistent playing time.

“You want to make sure you’re ready at all times or anytime your name is called, you want to be ready and go out and perform the best you can,” Davis said during his end-of-season press conference on May 3rd.

“I feel like throughout the year, I kind of done it in certain areas, and sometimes, maybe I wasn’t prepared for the opportunity, like, you know, the last few games of the season. But I definitely feel like I’ve gotten better in my career and this year, under Mike Brown.”

Over 64 games with Sacramento in 2022-23, the Ole Miss product averaged 6.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range.

Davis’ strongest showing of the season took place on November 15th against the Brooklyn Nets when he scored 31 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field and seven-of-10 from beyond the arc while grabbing nine boards in a game that was broadcast nationally by TNT, creating the nickname ‘TNT-D.’

Should the Sacramento Kings bring Davis back in free agency?

After spending the past 2.5 seasons with Sacramento, Davis will enter unrestricted free agency on Friday, meaning that he will be able to sign with any team.

Davis is a spark-plug type of player that can run into a 20+ point outing at any time while providing plenty of energy on the defensive end. The guard made $4 million during the 2022-23 season and could be in the market for a similar deal this summer.

Would a Davis-Kings reunion make sense?

Sacramento general manager Monte McNair might have peeled back the curtain on that though process during last week’s NBA Draft when he selected 6’5 guard Colby Jones with the 34th overall pick, a player that possesses two-way potential as three-and-D option.

Jones, who has a 6’8 wingspan and the ability to defend positions one through three while shooting near 40 percent from three, makes a Davis reunion almost redundant for a team that needs to upgrade its forward positions and find a center to backup Domantas Sabonis.

Sacramento has been linked to several players in free agency–Harrison Barnes, Kyle Kuzma, Trey Lyles, and EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov–but all players are forwards, a clear area of need for a team that currently has no depth beyond Keegan Murray on the active roster.

Expect Davis to net offers from other teams on the market that are seeking guard help, but it’s possible the Kings reach out if they are seeking a veteran presence for their bench.
