Domantas Sabonis, Kings agree to five-year extension

Domantas Sabonis is officially here to stay.

The Sacramento Kings officially announced the extension of three-time All-Star and reigning All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis to a five-year contract that will run through the 2027-28 season.

Last year, there was a sense that the Sacramento-Indiana trade that brought Sabonis to Northern California in 2022 would be a failure if two things didn’t happen by the Summer of 2024:

• The Sacramento Kings end the 16-season playoff drought
• Domantas Sabonis signs a contract extension

Both happened before the end of 2023.

The Sacramento Kings have locked in their All-NBA center for the foreseeable future.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Kings have reached an agreement with Domantas Sabonis on a five-year, $217 million deal that will keep the 27-year-old in Sacramento through his prime.

Following an incredible 2022-23 season that resulted in the big man receiving MVP votes, Sabonis can now call Northern California home for a long time.

Sabonis had one of the best seasons from a center in the league’s lengthy history, averaging 19.1 points, 12.3 rebounds (led the NBA), and 7.3 assists (career-high) while shooting 61 percent from the field.

Only one other player in NBA history has averaged 19-12-7 while shooting 60 percent or higher from the field: Wilt Chamberlain.

The star center led the league in rebounds per game, total rebounds, and double-doubles (65) while also ranking top-five in win shares (12.6, second), offensive win shares (9.6, second), and assists (573, fifth).

Only two-time MVP Nikola Jokic (29) had more triple-doubles than Sabonis this season, as the Kings center finished the year with 14.

There was always a strong chance that Sabonis and the Kings would come to an agreement on an extension over the next year, but Sacramento’s increased cap space situation made it an ideal time for the franchise to lock up its All-Star center.

Now that Sabonis is under contract through the next half-decade, the Kings can focus on building around Sabonis and fellow All-NBA product De’Aaron Fox for years to come.
