The clock is ticking on whether or not Josh Jacobs signs a long-term contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

In March, the Raiders franchise tagged Jacobs. But that remains unsigned.

Jacobs and the Raiders have until July 17 to reach a long-term deal. According to the NFL, “after this date, the player may sign only a one-year contract with his prior club for the 2023 season, and such contract cannot be extended until after the club’s last regular season game.”

If he does end up signing before Monday, July 17, the 2023 franchise tag for running backs is just over $10 million.

Former sports agent turned analyst for CBS Sports Joel Corry recently reported he wouldn’t be surprised if the 25-year-old running back sits out of training camp. The Las Vegas Raiders report to camp on Tuesday, July 25.

It wouldn’t be a surprise for Jacobs to miss the start of Raiders training camp on July 25 if he doesn’t get a long-term deal by the deadline. Jacobs has yet to sign his franchise tender. Some unsigned franchise players have missed part or most of training camp and the preseason partially to protest not getting a long-term deal and to try to minimize the risk of a serious injury.

Because Jacobs hasn’t signed his franchise tag, Josh Jacobs would not be fined for missing camp because he technically is not part of the Raiders roster until that’s signed.

Prior to the 2022 season, the Raiders declined to pick up the fifth-year option for the 24th pick in the 2019 draft.

Then he went off. Josh Jacobs rushed for 1,653 total yards, securing the NFL’s rushing title and becoming only the second Raider to win the NFL’s rushing title. Raider legend and Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen led the league in rushing in 1985, his MVP season, with 1,759 yards.
