Watch: A’s fans boo MLB commissioner Rob Manfred at MLB Draft

The MLB Draft is supposed to be a special moment for the player getting picked. On Sunday though, baseball fans let MLB commissioner Rob Manfred know what’s more important than their team’s next prospect.

On Day One of the 2023 MLB Draft, the Oakland Athletics selected shortstop Jacob Wilson from Grand Canyon University with the sixth overall pick.

However, as Manfred was reading the team’s selection, fans drowned out the commissioner’s voice with chants of “sell the team.”

Who else did the A’s pick on Day 1 of the 2023 MLB Draft?

Wilson, a California native ranked as the 10th prospect by MLB Pipeline, wasn’t the only new member of the Athletics Sunday.

The A’s used pick 39 in the Competitive Balance Round A portion of the Draft to select Myles Naylor from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School. In the second round, the A’s picked outfielder Ryan Lasko from Rutgers University in the Second Round.

The 2023 MLB Draft continues on Monday with rounds 3-10. On Tuesday, the draft concludes with rounds 11 through 20.

Where do the A’s relocation efforts stand?

Earlier this summer, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signed SB-1, formerly SB-509, granting the Oakland Athletics $380 in public funding for an eventual $1.5 billion stadium along the Las Vegas Strip.

The Nevada state Senate and Assembly passed the bill after a seven-day special session to fine-tune the financing. The only move next for relocation to become official is approval from 75% of  MLB owners. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is expected to announce members of a relocation committee soon. According to the Associated Press, there is currently no timetable to consider the A’s relocation.

Las Vegas could be the fourth home for the franchise if MLB owners approve the relocation. The team originates from Philadelphia where they played from 1901-1954. The Athletics then moved to Kansas City until 1968, when they relocated to Oakland. The A’s lease with the Oakland Coliseum ends after the 2024 season.
