Frank Gore returns to San Francisco 49ers as football advisor

After almost 10 years away from the franchise, 49ers great Frank Gore is returning to the team in a front office role.

Reports surfaced Saturday that the former San Francisco 49ers running back has accepted the role of football advisor with the organization. While the exact details of his position have not been revealed, Gore’s expertise in the position will surely be beneficial for the Red & Gold.

Several news outlets confirmed the hire after his agent Malki Kawa tweeted the news Saturday morning.

“We’re going to have Frank do a little bit of everything to expose him to all that the front office does,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “He was with us in draft meetings from time to time. He’ll go out on the road with some of our road scouts to make school calls. He is a smart football mind, and we want to tap into it and he wants to learn from us, so it’s a good thing for everyone involved.”

Gore has been rumored to be itching for a return to the NFL, working with the 49ers prior to last April’s draft. The move now puts him with former player John Lynch, a man who knows a thing or two about the transition to the front office.

“Frank showed an interest in coming in here,” Lynch said in April. “Somebody made that opportunity available to me years ago, and I was really grateful for it. So if someone is willing to put the time in, and given as much as he has to the organization, absolutely, we are going to open our arms. I think he learned a lot through the process.”

Frank Gore, 40, is the third all-time leading rusher in NFL history, having a 16-year career. He featured for five teams, including the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts to name a few.

His most notable stint came in San Francisco, rushing for more than 11,000 yards in 10 seasons. He also had 75 total touchdowns and 2883 receiving yards.

An all-time great, Gore’s 16,000 rushing yards sits only behind Walter Payton (16,726) and Emmitt Smith (18,355). He is first eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the class of 2026.
