Two teams that once split a region, are still sharing players to this day.

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Anthony Averett Thursday, agreeing to a one-year deal. To make room for the player, the team has also placed fellow CB Terrance Mitchell on injured reserve, effectively ending his 2023 season.

Further details have not been disclosed at this time.

Anthony Averett, 28, is a five-year veteran of the NFL, playing in 51 games in his career so far. The Alabama alum was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After spending four years in Baltimore, Averett joined the Silver & Black for a lone season in 2022. Starting 27 games, he has accumulated 114 combined tackles, 23 passes defended and three interceptions in his career.

On the flip side, Terrance Mitchell’s 2023 campaign is over before it begun.

The Sacramento native signed with the 49ers last week, with his last Training Camp appearance coming Tuesday. An Oregon alum, Mitchell, 31, amassed more than 300 combined tackles, 63 PDs and nine INTs in 94 career contests. A standout at Luther Burbank High School, the CB was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Already dealing with injuries in the secondary, the 49ers replace one veteran cornerback with another, hoping Averett can serve a role for defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
