Oakland Athletics announce construction firm for Las Vegas ballpark

The Oakland Athletics have announced they’ve hired the construction firm Mortenson | McCarthy to build the potential stadium in Las Vegas.

Mortenson | McCarthy is familiar with Sin City, too. The company built the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium in July 2020. Additional projects the firm also completed include Truist Park for the Atlanta Braves, Target Field for the Minnesota Twins, Chase Center for the Golden State Warriors, and  Climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Kraken.

In a press release announcing the move, the A’s note the official hiring is “subject to approval by the Las Vegas Stadium Authority.”

Earlier this summer, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo signed SB-1, formerly SB-509, granting the Oakland Athletics $380 in public funding for an eventual $1.5 billion stadium along the Las Vegas Strip. The stadium, which would be located at the current site of the Tropicana, would include a retractable roof and roughly 30,000 seats.

The next move for relocation to become official is approval from 75% of MLB owners. A timeline for when that vote may take place is currently unknown. If the move is approved, the stadium may not be available to the team until at least 2028.

If the move comes to fruition, Las Vegas would be the fourth home for the franchise. The team originates from Philadelphia where they played from 1901-1954. The Athletics then moved to Kansas City until 1968, when they relocated to Oakland. The A’s have been looking to either update or move out of the Oakland Coliseum for years.
