With less than two weeks to go until the 49ers’ regular-season opener, the franchise is reportedly nowhere close to getting Nick Bosa back in the building.

Reports surfaced Monday morning that San Francisco and the star pass rusher are not close on an agreement at this time, with no indication of when an extension will be reached. The news was relayed by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who gave his thoughts on Bosa’s holdout.

“They’re not there yet and I don’t get the sense they’re close at all. So, I don’t get the sense anything is imminent,” Rapoport said on The Pat McAfee Show Monday. “But at least they’re, you know, it sounds like there’s been some level of conversation I guess.”

Nick Bosa and the 49ers have been in talks on a contract extension all offseason. While many expected the talks to be concluded by now, that’s not the case, with the defensive end absent for the entirety of training camp this month.

Despite that, many individuals, including Rapoport, feel that it is only a matter of time before the deal gets done, and that the player will need little time to re-acclimate to the league.

“There’s still is a lot of time. I mean, I’m sure [Bosa] keeps himself in unbelievable shape. He’s not going to need a lot of like acclimation period, you know. So even if he shows up five days from now, like, I’m sure he’ll be ready for the season,” Rapoport stated.

But while the player’s play on the field shouldn’t waver, the real question that remains is how much he’ll make.

Nick Bosa, 25, is coming off a career season in 2022, leading the NFL in sacks (18.5). A player entering his prime, the 49ers understand that they will have to shell out the big bucks to keep him around. The kicker will be how the contract is structured, with maximum money very much on the table.

That could be what’s holding up both sides from coming to an agreement. Regardless, all sides believe this deal will come to fruition before the team’s opener versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“The 49ers’ offer is substantial and I’m confident that the deal will make him the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL,” Rapoport said.
