The biggest difference fans should expect to see from Josh Jacobs this season is on his jersey.

When the Raiders announced they’ve re-signed Jacobs, the running back announced he’ll don a new number. Previously having worn number 28, las year’s rushing champion will now wear number 8.

But that should be the biggest change. Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said Wednesday they haven’t changed the playbook and anticipates Jacobs will acclimate easily after missing training camp and preseason.

“He’s one of the smartest football players that you’re going to coach. We didn’t change our vernacular or terminology much so, just for him, getting reacclimated to certain things, in terms of his footwork and schemes. Really getting the opportunity to meet a few of his teammates that he hasn’t had an opportunity to meet,” McDaniels said. “I think he’ll acclimate very easily back into the system and what he’s doing. Then we’ll see the overall conditioning and readiness to play, how many snaps that’ll be, we’ll figure that out in the next ten days.”

McDaniels went on to say there’s nobody in the Raiders organization who doesn’t love Josh Jacobs.

“It’s exciting whenever you get a player back, whether it’s from injury or something like this, it always give you a little bit of a boost,” McDaniels said.

Additional roster updates

While speaking to the media Wednesday, McDaniels also provided updates on players who have been out with injuries and where other players will land on the depth chart.

“We’ll never be at full health, it seems like,” McDaniels said when asked about Chandler Jones. “It doesn’t pay to get them back too early and then they’re out for the beginning of the season. A lot of these guys are turning a corner.”

When asked if the team has decided on a backup quarterback, McDaniels said they’ll have to declare what they plan to do eventually, but he doesn’t feel as if anyone won the job.

“I’ve always looked at it like we have a starter and then everybody behind him is going to be ready to go,” McDaniels said.
