The San Francisco 49ers are less than 10 days away from opening day, yet they still remain optimistic that Nick Bosa will be in Pittsburgh on Sept. 10th.

The star pass rusher has not been able to come to terms on a new mega-deal this summer, staying away from the team until it is resolved. Despite constant communication, both sides haven’t reached a middle ground at the beginning of September.

While the front office would have liked to get the deal done sooner than this, the 49ers remain confident in Bosa’s abilities on the football field. When asked if they had a “drop-dead” date to play Week 1, coach Kyle Shanahan said he had to see him practice first before any final decisions were made.

And he’s hoping that comes sooner rather than later.

“I don’t, I’ve never had to make that decision before and I won’t make that until I see him,” Kyle Shanahan told KNBR on Thursday. “I mean, I’m gonna do everything I can to hope that he plays Pittsburgh. I can’t make that decision until you see a guy, you see him out [on the practice field]. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to get him into practice next week.”

Other coaches feel a similar way, including defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

When asked about his star defensive end, the coach was elated, describing him as unique in multiple facets of the game.

“I think we all know that he is unique,” Wilks said about Bosa Thursday. “I think you can definitely do different things with him, as we’ve done in the past. Particularly on third down and certain things that you want to try and free him up.”

Because of that, the coach isn’t worried about Nick Bosa getting tired, aware of his presence & skill set on the football field.

“He’s solid all the way around,” Wilks stated. “So I don’t think it’s going to be an issue when that time comes. Hopefully it’s soon.”

Negotiations could take a little longer, however, with general manager John Lynch giving zero updates on the status of contract talks this week.

“No updates,” Lynch said Wednesday. “I’m going to stick to that, but communication, and that’s a good thing. So, I’ll leave it at that.”
