Los Angeles Lakers guard Isaiah Thomas underwent successful surgery on his right hip earlier today. The procedure was done to “clean up the joint of all inflammatory debris related to his injury from last season”. Thomas’ recovery will keep him sidelined for the next four months.

Traded to the Lakers at the trade deadline, Thomas is set to become a free agent this summer. Not part of a playoff team, Thomas elected to shorten his season and give himself the best chance to be completely healthy by the start of the 2018-2019 season. There has been no indication that the injury will change his free agency value, but it is expected to play an important part in this summer’s negotiations.

Thomas is averaging 15.2 points and 4.8 assists in 32 games this season. Last year with the Boston Celtics, Thomas enjoyed the best season of his career, averaging 28.9 points and 5.9 assists a game.
