Charles Barkley has a knack for rattling off hot takes, and the Hall of Famer didn’t waste any time during Tuesday’s season-opening Inside The NBA broadcast.

As Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson previewed Tuesday’s matchup between the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns, the former MVP sounded off about the current state of California’s NBA teams.

According to Barkley, the Warriors are the fourth-best team in California behind the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and Los Angeles Clippers.

“The Warriors are the 4th best team in California, in my opinion,” Barkley said. “Old people don’t get better, they just get older. I just don’t like their team going forward. They’ve had a great run, great organization. The Lakers, Sacramento and the Clippers are all better than the Warriors.”

The statement caused the rest of the Inside The NBA crew to raise their eyebrows, but could there be some truth to Barkley’s declaration that Golden State could finish with the worst record out of the four California teams?

Following a second-round exit at the hands of the Lakers, the Warriors re-tooled this summer by acquiring future Hall of Fame guard Chris Paul to help run the offense next to Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins.

Sacramento and Golden State are on the way to becoming one of the NBA’s must-watch matchups, especially after April’s seven-game playoff series that concluded with Curry’s 50-point masterpiece.

The Lakers and Clippers are deep, but shrouded in injury concerns as aging stars like LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George will determine where those teams finish in the standings.

Each of California’s four NBA teams have plenty of talent to finish near the top of the Western Conference standings, but one will finish with the worst record of the bunch.

Will Barkley’s opening night statement ring true once we look at the standings in April? Time will tell.
