Derek Carr didn’t have the cleanest exit from Las Vegas.

With two weeks remaining in the 2022 season, the Las Vegas Raiders made the surprising decision to bench long-time starter Derek Carr. Through an up-and-down season, Carr’s benching wound up being the final nail in the coffin of his Raiders career.

And while he may have initially been upset at the franchise that drafted him, his mind eventually changed, hoping his former teammates find success. Now with the Raiders going through another coaching change, Carr hopes everyone remembers the human side of these things.

“I just feel for them and their family. I’ve been through it, and this business is so tough that we forget the human side of things,” Carr told reporters in New Orleans when asked for his thoughts. “So, my heart is for Josh and Dave and for my friends over there dealing with another change. I lost count of how many coaches it was for me at that point. There’s another change for those guys to go through, a new scheme to learn, a new philosophy. That doesn’t make it easy as a player, but at the end of the day, nobody cares. You keep it pushing.”

The Raiders drafted Derek Carr in 2014, who ended up starting 142 games for the Silver and Black. Over his nine years as the team’s starter, he threw for a franchise-leading 35,222 passing yards, finished with 62-78 record, took the team to the playoffs twice and made four Pro Bowl appearances. He also played for six different head coaches. When he signed with the New Orleans Saints this past offseason, he reteamed with his Raiders coach, Dennis Allen.

“I wish Dave and Josh the best. As they know, and I’ve told them, I wish them the absolute best,” Carr said. “So, to see that it’s hard. It breaks your heart for their families. But at the end of the day, it’s a business. They know that and they’ll be fine and move on. They’ll have jobs in this league for sure.”

In his first year in New Orleans, Carr has thrown for 1,910 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions. The Saints are currently tied for first in the NFC South.
