The New Orleans Pelicans came into Golden 1 Center Sunday night with a 3-0 season record against the Sacramento Kings. Well, they emphatically improved that head-to-head matchup to 4-0 with a 133-100 blowout win that led to head coach Mike Brown apologizing to those in attendance.

With no Zion Williamson, the Pelicans accumulated a 12-point lead by the end of quarter one and never looked back. CJ McCollum contributed 30 points, seven rebounds, and four assists on 11/16 from the field, including 7/10 from three.

When Mike Brown first sat at the podium postgame, he quickly apologized to their fanbase. “Not much to say,” he explained. “They flat out kicked our behind. I feel sorry for the fans that spent their money to come watch the game today.”

He pointed out the difficulties of winning a game where De’Aaron Fox (three points), Keegan Murray (eight points), and Malik Monk (six points) combined to shoot 5/29 from the field.

“The lack of fight to get back in the game, to stay in the game, however you want to call it, was nonexistent,” Mike Brown continued.

The Sacramento Kings fans in attendance Sunday night rained down boos multiple times throughout the 48 minutes of action, understandably. At one point, they trailed by fifty points — FIFTY!

Truthfully, nothing went right for the Kings that night. You could find razor-thin silver linings in how their deep bench unit performed in the fourth quarter when the scoreboard was already out of hand (which may lead to rotational changes in the coming weeks), but that’s about it.

From the locker room postgame, Domantas Sabonis was asked about the boos they received.

“It sucks,” he said. “We had two great home games the day before, with a lot of energy and fight, and tonight we didn’t show that. It’s normal. It sucks as players you’re on your home court, but we definitely understand that it was not our best performance.”

Now, it’s on to the next one. The Kings start a five-game road trip Tuesday night in Detroit to take on the (3-33) Pistons before facing off against the (8-25) Charlotte Hornets Wednesday.

The NBA regular season is a marathon, not a sprint, and rattling off a couple of convincing wins could quickly shake the bad taste left from Sunday night’s blowout to the Pelicans.
