The San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers are two of the most historic and longest-tenured franchises. Between the two, they’ve won nine Lombardi trophies — five by San Francisco and four from Green Bay.

Both teams have matched up nine times in the postseason, with a record-setting tenth scheduled for Saturday at 5:15 p.m. PST at Levi’s Stadium.

A few have come recently, but the first four occurred consecutively between the 1996-1999 seasons. The initial three came in the divisional round, where the Brett Favre-led Packers came away with convincing wins. Despite 1998’s matchup taking place in the NFC Championship game, the results were similar.

San Francisco didn’t manage their first postseason win over Green Bay until their fourth meeting in the following season’s wild-card round. With eight seconds remaining and the Niners facing a four-point deficit, Steve Young dropped back and found Terrell Owens roughly 25 yards down the field for a game-winning touchdown.

Three seasons later (2002), the Packers returned the favor — once again in the wild-card round — with a 25-15 victory. It took some time for the two franchises to meet again in the postseason.

Fast forward to 2013, when Aaron Rodgers faced off against Colin Kaepernick after he took over for Alex Smith around the midway mark. Despite it looking close early, San Francisco managed a stellar 45-24 win to advance. But they would be back again the following year.

A game-winning drive that ended with Phil Dawson knocking down a field goal as time expired allowed two consecutive postseason wins for the 49ers over Green Bay.

By 2014, San Francisco and Green Bay had been postseason opponents six times. The two more recent showdowns are likely fresher memories for both fanbases.

In 2020, they met in the NFC Championship Game. Of course, Rodgers remained the quarterback on one side, but he faced off against Jimmy Garoppolo with Raheem Mostert (who had a huge game) behind him at running back. After jolting out to a notable early lead, the Packers seemed to put up a fight before ultimately being unable to overcome the initial deficit — three straight postseason losses for the Packers when facing off against San Francisco.

And then there was the 2022 divisional round, their final and most recent showing. This game rivaled 1999’s matchup for a tense, close battle, but the scoring was minimal. Plenty of stops for both sides were finalized with 49ers’ kicker Robbie Gould converting a 45-yard field goal — San Francisco beat Green Bay 13-10.

The Niners have one more win (5) than Green Bay (4) heading into Saturday’s matchup.

Now, for the tenth time in NFL history, these teams are set to face off once again. The quarterback matchups certainly feel different, with Brock Purdy and Jordan Love running the show for their respective squads. Can San Francisco extend their postseason record or will Green Bay manage to even the all-time score?
