From the moment the 2023 NFL season started, the 49ers had a special vibe to them. Fast forward five months, they’re back in the Super Bowl, and Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy are history-makers.

The NFL announced Thursday that McCaffrey and Purdy are the recipients of the FedEx Ground & Air Player of the Year awards for 2023. This is the first time in NFL history that a duo on the same team has won both awards, with it fully deserved by both players.

And the coolest part is how they found out.

Kristin Juszczyk, wife of 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk, recently signed a deal with the NFL to make custom apparel. Her first task was creating custom jackets for both McCaffrey and Purdy in honor of their awards. Kyle helped out in the process by delivering the news that both men had won the yearly awards this week.

Brock Purdy, 24, made his first Pro Bowl team this season, setting the 49ers franchise record for passing yards in a single season. He finished the regular season with 4,280 passing yards, 31 total touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The Arizona native has a 21-5 record as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

However, everything changed for the 49ers when they acquired CMC.

The versatile offensive weapon had a historical 2023, finishing with 2000-plus scrimmage yards for the first time since 2019. McCaffrey has been a revelation since joining the 49ers, with more than 3,200 total yards and 31 TDs in 27 games in Red & Gold. He also tied Jerry Rice for most consecutive games with a touchdown (15).

McCaffrey and Purdy were two of the nine 49ers to make the Pro Bowl team. The task is far from done though, with Super Bowl LVIII firmly on their minds as the 49ers look to hoist their sixth Lombardi Trophy on Sunday.

Upcoming Schedule for Christian McCaffrey, Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers

  • Sunday, February 11th – Super Bowl LVIII – San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs – 3:30 PM PST
