Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jake Moody of the San Francisco 49ers took turns holding the Super Bowl record for longest field goal during Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Butker drilled a 57-yard field goal with 5:01 left in the third quarter to supplant Moody, the rookie who set the mark when he nailed a 55-yarder in the second quarter.

Prior to Sunday, the record had stood for 30 years. Steve Christie of the Buffalo Bills set it with a 54-yarder against the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII on Jan. 30, 1994.

Butker’s kick came on a high snap and the ball narrowly cleared the line before making it through the uprights. The kick pulled Kansas City within 10-6.

The kick was Butker’s sixth field goal of 50 or more yards in the postseason. He has made 28 more in seven regular seasons with the Chiefs.

Moody’s kick 12 seconds into the second quarter easily carried through the uprights to pass Christie.

Moody, out of Michigan, kicked a 57-yard field goal during the regular season. The 49ers selected him in the third round of the draft.
