A loss in the Super Bowl is bad enough, but losing one of your best players on defense has left the 49ers heartbroken.

49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered a torn Achilles in Super Bowl LVIII. The injury occurred early in the second quarter when the player attempted to sprint onto the field. Video replay captured the moment he got hurt, falling to the ground after he planted his left leg into the grass.

Greenlaw was treated on the sidelines before an injury cart was brought out to take him to the locker room. He was ruled out thereafter.

After the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the news, likely meaning a lengthy rehab forcoming for Greenlaw. While the team is devastated over their three-point loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, players are even more crushed for their fallen teammate.

“I’m sick to my stomach. I’m still sick. I see him at halftime and I’m so hurt for him and obviously wanting to win this for him,” 49ers LB Fred Warner said about Greenlaw postgame.

“Dre is a one-on-one human being,” 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa stated. “He was pushing through so much this year. And I think 99 percent of players wouldn’t have been able to do what he did. And he put his body on the line for this and it sucks that we can’t get him [a Super Bowl].”

At the time of the injury, Greenlaw was on fire, flying around Allegiant Stadium. He finished the game with only three tackles, halting a promising Super Bowl performance.

“Aw man, that’s my dog. I call him Dre-Day, today was suppose to be his day,” 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings said.

As for the game as a whole? Obvious heartbreak.

San Francisco has suffered two Super-Bowl losses to the Chiefs in five seasons, with Kyle Shanahan feeling the most disappointed for his players.

“I hurt the most for the players,” he stated. “I can’t tell you guys how long it takes to get here and how long it takes to get through an NFL season. Our guys I hurt for the most.”
