ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins joined “The Drive Guys” Wednesday, to expand upon his pitch that Kings center Domantas Sabonis should be in the MVP race.

On NBA Today, Perkins laid out an argument for why Sabonis should be in the discussion.

Talking to Kevin “Whitey” Gleason and Kyle Draper, Perkins expanded on his point, adding if the race is going to be decided by numbers, then Domas should be in consideration.

“Sabonis is leading the league in triple-doubles, he’s leading the league in double-doubles, he’s averaging 20 [points], 13 [rebounds], and eight [assists] and his team is winning,” Perkins said. “My thing is why is Sabonis not mentioned or it’s a problem when you mention his name.”

The ESPN host went on to say he’s comfortable mentioning Sabonis in the MVP race because “I’m here to tell the people what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.”

Additional topics discussed include:

  • His MVP criteria
  • Domantas Sabonis and his stats this year compared to Nuggets center Nikola Jokic when he won his first MVP award
  • Do teams need a player to lead the culture?
  • Oklahoma City Thunder leaders believed Sabonis was going to be special back when he was a rookie
  • Sabonis is “a top 5 big” in the NBA
