It looks like Brandon Allen is sticking around the Bay Area for a little longer.

According to multiple reports from Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers are bringing back Allen on a one-year contract extension. The terms of the contract were not released.

The 31-year-old quarterback joined San Francisco last season. He did not play a single snap for the 49ers.

Brandon Allen was third on the team’s quarterback depth chart, behind starter Brock Purdy and backup Sam Darnold, who is set to become a free agent.

Selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Allen has played for numerous teams, including the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos, and Cincinnati Bengals. His best year came in 2020 when he threw for nearly 1,000 yards with the Bengals.

Earlier this offseason, Matt Barrow, of The Athletic, reported that the 49ers see Allen “as a strong candidate to be the top backup next season.”

Key offseason dates for the San Francisco 49ers

  • Monday, March 11th – 2024 NFL free agency contract talks began at 9 a.m. PST
  • Wednesday, March 13th – 2024 free agency signing period begins at 1 p.m. PST
