Before he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, the NFL announced Jimmy Garoppolo will serve a two-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy.

After signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, he spoke to the media, addressing his suspension for the first time.

Garoppolo said the suspension stemmed from a mistake.

“I mean, [I] just messed up the TUE [Therapeutic Use Exemptions], really. I hate to joke about it, but just messed up the TUE when I first got to Las Vegas,” Garoppolo said.

The 32-year-old quarterback will be able to participate in offseason programs and preseason, but when the 2024 season gets underway, the team won’t see him for two weeks.

“Never really been in this situation before so it’s a weird one, but it is what it is,” Garoppolo said, adding he’ll attack OTAs and training camp “and let those first two games pass by. Hopefully, we’ll get some dubs and start off 2-0 and keep things moving. But it’s just one of those situations. It is what it is. You got to deal with it and just keep moving on and stay positive.”

Garoppolo spent six years in the NFC West with San Francisco, going 8-0 against his new team and leading the Niners to two NFC Championship games. In 10 seasons with the 49ers, Raiders and New England Patriots, the 32-year-old QB has thrown for 15,494 yards, 94 touchdowns and 51 interceptions.

Last season, he started six games for the Raiders last season before being replaced by rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell in Week 9. Over seven appearances (six starts) with Las Vegas, Garoppolo threw for 1,205 yards and seven touchdowns, but also racked up nine interceptions. His 172.1 yards per game average was the lowest of his NFL career (minimum seven games played).
