The San Francisco 49ers have seen a mass exodus of rotational players this offseason, with Randy Gregory the latest to leave the Bay Area.

Reports emerged Wednesday afternoon that the former 49ers defensive end is signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The move gives Tampa Bay a proven pass rusher in there building, to go along with their younger core on the edge. Further details regarding the deal have not been disclosed at this time.

Bleacher Report insider Jordan Schultz was first with the news Wednesday, with the Buccaneers confirming the deal thereafter.

Randy Gregory, 31, joined the 49ers midseason from the Denver Broncos via trade. He was used sporadically, only starting three games the entire season. He did not start for the Red & Gold, appearing in 15 contests for the NFC West squad. His stats reflect that, racking up 3.5 sacks, 20 combined tackles and 10 quarterback hits.

Billed as a player capable of playing opposite Nick Bosa, Gregory’s 49ers’ tenure didn’t work as well as it could have, used on only 35% of the defensive snaps. He also saw time at special teams, playing 15% of the time.

Gregory joins other former 49ers defensive linemen to lead this offseason, including former captain Arik Armstead. Other notable names include Javon Kinlaw, Clelin Ferrell and Chase Young. SF has also re-bolstered the DL room, adding Leonard Floyd and others to the mix.

The 49ers have remained in the free-agent market the entire offseason, and will continue to add pieces heading into the summer.

Key offseason dates for the San Francisco 49ers

  • April 15 First Day of Voluntary Workouts
  • April 25-27 – 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit
  • May 20-21, May 23, May 28-29, May 31 OTAs
  • June 4-6 Mandatory Minicamp
