The 49ers have undergone an extensive overhaul of their roster this offseason, with Logan Ryan the latest to embark on a different journey.

The former San Francisco 49ers safety announced his retirement from football Tuesday, ending an 11-year career in the NFL. Ryan made the announcement via his Instagram, releasing a statement and video package to make it official.

“Thank you to all my family, friends and teammates for the guidance and support! Thanks to the fans for watching! Won 2 Super Bowls and got out happy and healthy to be the best father for my children! Thanks again for 11 seasons! Cheers to what’s next,” he stated Tuesday.

Logan Ryan, 33, was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He spent the first four years of his career in the AFC East, winning two Super Bowls in NE. He later would play three seasons with the Tennessee Titans, and two seasons with the New York Giants before pitstops in Tampa Bay and San Francisco.

The Rutgers alum amassed 755 combined tackles and 98 pass break-ups in 11 seasons. He also had 19 interceptions, 15 forced fumbles and 13 sacks in the NFL. While never making a Pro Bowl or All-Pro roster, Ryan proved a valuable starter for the majority of his career, able to play a variety of positions on defense.

He joined the 49ers halfway through the 2023 season, in light of Talanoa Hufanga’s season-ending ACL injury in Week 11. Ryan played eight contests for the Red & Gold, starting three games. While having inconsistent performances last season, his role as mentor for the team’s young secondary provided some stability down the stretch.

Ryan’s retirement leaves the 49ers a little thin at safety, with Hufanga and second-year prospect Ji’Ayir Brown listed as the starters. Former 49ers S Tashaun Gipson Sr. remains unsigned at this time.
