With the draft season rapidly approaching, the San Francisco 49ers have done their scouting on multiple fronts, including bringing a few local prospects in for a workout.

The 49ers hosted their 2024 Local Pro Day on Wednesday, showcasing regional athletes ahead of selection weekend. This year’s Pro Day had a few surprises, however, with some legacy attendees on the field at Levi’s Stadium. And while most players won’t end up on the 49ers, it’s always great to get an extra look at prospects from the region.

Here are some of the highlights from the 2024 Local Pro Day.

Former College Standout QB Lends a Helping Hand

The 49ers’ 2024 Pro Day featured more than just hopeful prospects, as former third-round pick Kellen Mond was on hand Wednesday.

Mond, 24, was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2021 NFL Draft. His NFL journey has been bumpy this far, making his way to the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts the last two years. He has not been featured in a regular-season game since his rookie season.

Per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, Mond was brought in by the 49ers because only one other QB was scheduled to appear on Pro Day (San Jose State’s Chevan Cordeiro). The Red & Golds reached out to Mond’s agent, with the player jumped  at the opportunity.

The former Texas A&M standout is familiar with 49ers’ assistant coach Klint Kubiak, working with him while he was Minnesota’s offensive coordinator. Mond is hopeful the tryout could turn into. contract offer for next season, but has not had those talks with the 49ers at this time.

Terique Owens & the Legacy Kids

The 49ers have been interested in quite a few legacy players this draft cycle, from Frank Gore Jr. to Brenden Rice. There were a few of those on hand Wednesday, none with a bigger name than Terique Owens.

Son of hall-of-famer Terrell Owens, Terique played his college ball at Florida Atlantic University before transferring to Missouri State for the last two seasons. He had a breakout in 2023, recording 528 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 10 games. His play was enough to warrant 49ers’ brass sending scouts to his Pro Day last month, earning a second look this week in Santa Clara.

The elder Owens was also at Levi’s Stadium Wednesday, taking in his son’s workout with his former team.

“He’s a late bloomer,” Terrell said of his son. “Obviously, he has the physical attributes for a receiver. For him, it’s all about reps; it’s all about experience. I think once he gets on a roster, that’s where he’ll be able to improve and enhance his skillset. He just needs to get his foot in the door. After that, it’s up to him.”

Owens, 23, is not projected to be drafted at the end of the month, hoping for an opportunity to sign as a free agent thereafter.

Another legacy name on hand Wednesday was Washington State’s Ron Stone Jr.

The elder Stone played for the 49ers from 2002 to 2003, starting at right guard a majority of the time. He made the Pro Bowl his first season with the Red & Gold.

The younger Stone played six seasons in the PAC-12, racking up 201 total tackles and 16 sacks as a linebacker/edge rusher. He is expected to be either a late-round selection or go undrafted this month.
