The San Francisco 49ers have been looking to improve their secondary this offseason, signing Rock Ya-Sin to solidify that notion.

The 49ers announced Thursday that they had signed the cornerback to a one-year deal. Ya-Sin is seen as starting option on the outside, opposite of Pro Bowler Charvarius Ward. No further details on his deal have been released at this time.

The 49ers made the official announcement Wednesday, with national media picking it up thereafter.

Rock Ya-Sin, 27, was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played with the Colts for three years, starting 29 games in that timeframe. He would sign for the Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens the next two years. The Temple product has racked up 196 combined tackles and 29 passes defended in his NFL career.

Ya-Sin now joins a 49ers squad that is thin in the secondary, having to face challenges in rejuvenating a previously older safety group. The cornerback group faces similar challenges, with none of the first five members signed past the 2024 season. That includes Ward and fellow standout Deommodore Lenoir.

Ya-Sin now joins a CB room looking to be long and physical in 2024, tools that he possesses in spades. While he’ll have to work for starting minutes, a strong training camp could propel him up the depth chart.

The Temple alum is also well-versed in special teams, playing a large portion of his 2023 snaps with the Ravens there.

Despite the added secondary depth, the 49ers should not be discouraged from adding more at the position in the draft later this month.
