ESPN’s NBA Front Office insider Bobby Marks joined “The Drive Guys” Tuesday afternoon to talk about the options the Sacramento Kings have in the upcoming draft, free agency and more

Because they missed the playoffs, Sacramento gets to keep its first-round pick this year. In the deal to acquire Kevin Huerter two years ago, the Kings lottery-protected their pick until 2024. Next year, the pick is top-12 protected and if Atlanta doesn’t acquire it in 2025, then it becomes top-10 protected in 2026.

The Sacramento Kings currently hold the 13th-best odds of securing the top pick in June’s NBA Draft.

In his offseason guide, and while talking to Sactown Sports, Marks breaks down what the Sacramento Kings can do with their draft picks. The team may not be as restricted as some may believe.

“They can move their own first in June, starting the night of the draft. I think if you’re asking Sacramento, they probably would have wanted to convey this year’s first to Atlanta based on the potential of next year’s draft,” Marks said. “There’s certainly protections on what you owe next year [but] when you get to June, the calendar year jumps another year. So basically it goes to 2031, you can trade picks within a seven-year window. So you’re looking at this June’s pick and maybe three years out, based on when that Atlanta pick is conveyed. And you’ve got pick swaps, that’s a little more dangerous.”

Additional topics discussed include:

  • Interviewing with the Sacramento Kings front office
  • Has the current Kings roster plateaued?
  • What limitations do the Kings have with re-signing Malik Monk
  • The projected mid-level exception and who the Kings could use that money on
  • How are teams like the Boston Celtics able to add players with superstars?
  • Did the Kings make the right choice extending Domantas Sabonis last summer?
  • What’s the market price for players like Zach LaVine, Jerami Grant and others?
