Where do things currently stand with the Sacramento Kings roster?

After a flurry of moves around the league that saw several big names switch teams, the NBA offseason has come to a standstill.

Things were bound to slow down at some point–they do each summer–as teams now look to round out their rosters in anticipation of the upcoming 2024-25 season. While the larger moves could be over, there is still work to be done for many teams, including the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings added undrafted rookie guard Boogie Ellis to its roster over the weekend, a well-deserved move for the USC product after averaging 10.0 points and 1.2 steals per game on 47/47/75 shooting splits for Sacramento during NBA Summer League (eight appearances).

After adding Ellis, who will compete in training camp for a roster spot, the Kings now have an even more guard-heavy roster as the search for frontcourt help continues.

The Kings are very heavy at the guard spots, with several guards (De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Keon Ellis, and Kevin Huerter) capable of logging minutes in the starting unit.

Sacramento’s big swing of the offseason was the sign-and-trade deal for six-time All-Star wing DeMar DeRozan, who seems to be in line to slot next to Keegan Murray in the Kings’ starting forward spots. Outside of DeRozan, the only other forward that McNair has acquired this summer was Jalen McDaniels, who logged just 10.8 minutes per game last season for the Toronto Raptors.

McNair and his front office still have assets to play with when it comes to making another move, whether it be for a Cam Johnson-type player or another trade that helps Sacramento beef up its frontline.

With two months to go until the Sacramento Kings report to training camp for the 2024-25 season, there is a good chance this roster will look different come October.

From a salary cap standpoint, the Kings are currently $7 million below the first tax apron, meaning they have slim flexibility in swinging another trade without sending out salary to match.

Will McNair take another shot at making a considerable upgrade to the roster, or will he hunt for some bargain free agents and take this group into camp?

The dog days of the NBA offseason have arrived.

Sacramento will continue to look to add to its roster before players report for training camp at the end of September. The Kings currently have two open roster spots that general manager Monte McNair will have to fill in the coming weeks and months.
