De’Aaron Fox shares gratitude after reaching 10K career points

Countless players have donned a Sacramento Kings jersey over the years, but very few have accomplished what De’Aaron Fox has in his NBA career.

Fox, who is just in his age-26 season, crossed the 10,000-point mark for his career during Monday’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers, becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to score 10,000 points or more during their time with the franchise,

Fox joins Hall of Famers Oscar Robertson (22,009), Jack Twyman (15,840), Mitch Richmond (12,070), and Tiny Archibald (10,894) on the exclusive list of greats–with plenty of basketball to be played in his career, too.

Following Sacramento’s win, Fox shared his gratitude for the accomplishment, noting that it was “much more special” to cross the mark at Golden 1 Center in front of 17,000 Kings fans.

“Yeah, I mean, honestly, I forgot that I was actually close. But, to do it at home, and obviously to do it in a win makes it even that much more special,” Fox said. “So, not a lot of people get to do that, and obviously, the average span of an NBA career is like three and a half, literally one contract. Being able to be blessed to be in the league that long, and being able to put the ball in the basket that many times, definitely a blessing.”

Fox has been a fan favorite in the 916 since being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Kentucky, and he has followed high expectations with a successful career as he enters his eighth season in the league.

The high-scoring guard, fresh off of averaging a career-high 26.6 points per game one season ago, has posted 22.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 1.7 steals per game during the Kings’ 1-2 start.

While Fox has been in a Sacramento uniform for nearly eight years, he will turn just 27 years old in December–a wrinkle that makes his current franchise ranks that much more impressive.

Kings greats like Chris Webber, Mike Bibby, Peja Stojakovic, and more have seen Fox surpass them in various categories in recent years–and none of those players listed reached the 10,000-point mark, either.

“I mean, man, what a career,” Kings head coach Mike Brown said of Fox’s rare feat. “What he’s done for the city of Sacramento, for the organization at such a young age to score his 10,000 points tonight, that should definitely be celebrated. So, congratulations to him, and the rest of the Fox family, because that’s a neat milestone to hit at this point in his career.”

Fox is closing in on passing Richmond for the Sacramento era (1985-present) scoring title, something he could do as soon as this season or early next year.

The guard is currently ranked fifth on the Kings’ all-time scoring list, fourth on the all-time assists list (first in the Sacramento era), and fourth on the all-time steals list (fourth in the Sacramento era).

Fox’s impact has been constant throughout his tenure with the Kings. Now, after a one-year hiatus, the guard will look to lead Sacramento back to the playoffs.

Sacramento will hit the road for a four-game road trip that will begin on Tuesday night, where the Kings will face the Utah Jazz on the second night of a back-to-back at the Delta Center.

Utah will also be playing its second game in as many days after facing the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night.
