Star wide receiver Deebo Samuel’s trade request has been granted.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers All-Pro wide receiver has been traded to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
As part of the deal, Washington will take on the remainder of Samuel’s $17.55 million contract for the 2025 season.
The trade came days after the 49ers’ general manager, John Lynch, said the team would honor Samuel’s request for a trade and see if any trade partners were available. Washington was a willing one after making the NFC title game after the 2024 season, thanks to the excellence of rookie QB Jayden Daniels.

âIt was a hard conversation to have with Kyle (Shanahan, head coach) because of the relationship that we have,â Samuel said in early February following his trade request. âBut I have to do whatâs best. Iâm more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think itâs best that we find another team.â
Samuel, 29, recorded 806 yards from scrimmage (670 receiving, 136 rushing) and four total touchdowns in 2024, his fewest in both categories since the 2020 campaign.
The 49ers signed Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million extension last August and also selected fellow wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Samuel signed a three-year, $71.55 million extension with the 49ers following his All-Pro campaign in 2021.
He has 4,792 receiving yards with 22 touchdowns and 1,143 rushing yards and 20 scores in 81 games since the 49ers selected him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Taking time off is great, but San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch would prefer not to start vacation mode again in January.
From the Super Bowl to missing the playoffs, San Francisco had more time than usual to plot a strategy for the upcoming offseason after finishing the 2024 season with a 6-11 record. The 49ers last finished with fewer than 10 wins in a season in 2020 (6-10).
âWe need to get younger,â Lynch said Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
In 2020, that meant reloading the defensive line â defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw was the 14th overall pick â and selecting wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk with a second first-round pick. They also drafted wide receiver Jauan Jennings in the seventh round.
