NFL free agency is fully underway. The San Francisco 49ers’ big signing up to this point was adding veteran wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year deal. Now, they’ve also reportedly shored up their tight end depth by bringing back Jake Tonges.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tonges is signing a two-year deal for $8 million, including $5.5 million guaranteed The deal was completed just before the restricted free agent tender deadline.

Obviously, George Kittle is in San Francisco’s starting tight end, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has used multiple tight end sets at times, and Tonges has also proven his ability to step up if Kittle were to go down.

With the 49ers’ recent injury luck, or lack thereof, having suitable depth seems advisable.

In 17 regular-season games played throughout 2025, Tonges tallied 293 yards on 34 receptions with five touchdowns. With Kittle unavailable due to a torn Achilles in their Wild Card win over the Philadelphia Eagles, Tonges recorded 73 yards on 6 catches over their two postseason appearances.

Adding Evans, re-signing Tonges, and doing the same with kicker Eddy Pineiro isn’t the most flashy offseason up to this point (aside from the surprising Evans addition), but there’s still plenty more time for moves to be made.

The San Francisco 49ers made one of the splashiest moves of the NFL offseason by signing veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, but the addition has also sparked a larger question: Should the 49ers be worried about the age of their core?

During an appearance on Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla ShowBrian Peacock of the Locked On 49ers podcast praised the move while acknowledging the broader concern that San Francisco is leaning on several players already in their 30s, including star running back Christian McCaffrey and veteran tight end George Kittle.

Peacock admitted the Evans signing initially caught him off guard.

“There’s a little bit of shock,” Peacock said. “I knew Mike Evans was out there as a possibility for the 49ers, but I wasn’t sure if the fit was right.”
