Over the weekend, the San Francisco 49ers traded linebacker Dee Winters to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Dallas’ fifth‑round (152nd overall) selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Selected by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Winters quickly developed into a dependable contributor on defense. Over three seasons, he appeared in 47 games and earned 27 starts, showcasing his speed, physicality, and awareness in both base and sub‑package roles.
A Texas native, Winters now returns to his home state after beginning his NFL career in San Francisco. His departure reflects the 49ers’ ongoing roster and draft strategy while acknowledging the impact he made during his time with the team.

The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have traded LB Dee Winters to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Dallas’ fifth round (152nd overall) draft choice in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Winters (5-11, 227) appeared in 47 games (27 starts) in three seasons (2023-25) after San Francisco selected him in the sixth round (216th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. He registered 145 tackles, 10 passes defensed and one interception (returned for a touchdown). He also appeared in four postseason contests (one start) and recorded nine tackles.
A 25-year-old native of Burton, TX, Winters attended Texas Christian University for four seasons (2019-22) where he appeared in 48 games (39 starts) and registered 246 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 10 passes defensed, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
