New San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris is only a few days into training camp, but he already likes what he sees from a veteran defense embracing change.
Speaking to reporters after practice, Morris praised the energy and competitiveness of his new group, particularly the leadership shown by Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
“It’s a lot of fun being a part of a new organization and watching how these guys practice,” Morris said. “You start to see that competitive spirit, particularly from my linebacker position with the two guys that lead there. It just kind of spreads throughout the defense, so it’s really fun to watch a player-led team do player-led things.”
Morris also addressed concerns after rookie defensive lineman Romello Height was carted off the practice field, quickly easing fears by revealing the injury wasn’t serious.
“I reached over to Fred Warner and asked him, ‘Was that just cramps?’ And he gave me the thumbs up,” Morris said. “There was no real concern. He had some real severe cramps.”
Like the rest of the organization, Morris said his first reaction to Kyle Shanahan’s recent concussion was concern for his friend rather than football.
“You digest it first as a friend,” Morris said. “You just kind of sit back, and you hope for the best, and you’re thankful that it wasn’t worse.” He added that the organization has enough experienced coaches and veteran players to keep everything on track while Shanahan recovers.

The linebackers have already made a strong impression on Morris, who said coaching Warner and Greenlaw together has been everything he expected.
“Going against those guys is always something that you were concerned with,” Morris said. “Watching those two communicate. The energy that they bring every single day to not only the field, but the meeting room, the building, the presence, the ideas, the thought process, it’s really fun.”
Morris also couldn’t hide his excitement about finally coaching Nick Bosa after years of game-planning against the All-Pro pass rusher.
“Another guy you’re happy to be on his team,” Morris said. “The amount of power he plays with, the speed, the presence. He’s one of the calmest players I’ve ever been around in my life.”

As for implementing his defensive philosophy, Morris believes the transition has gone smoothly because of the players’ willingness to learn.
“The common theme with the guys that we have on our roster is just they’re obsessed,” Morris said. “They crave more information… it’s not like, ‘This is not my defense.’ This is the defense we’re building that’s built for the Niners.”
Morris is also encouraged by the depth throughout the secondary, calling it “a great problem” to have so many capable defensive backs competing for playing time.
Between an experienced core, talented young players and new additions, the first-year coordinator believes competition will only elevate the unit as training camp progresses.
